Dolno Sonje to Bunkers on Mount Vodno

Bunker

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

This hike of 11 km with 360 m ascent takes you from the village Dolno Sonje at the foot of Mount Vodno to the bunkers on the mountain ridge.

The first half of the hike, up to the bunkers is on a rather boring service road. There are several gazebos along the trail for a rest or picnic.

Bunker

I had seen pictures of the bunkers on Mount Vodno already several times and wanted to see them with my own eyes. I believe they date back to Yugoslavian times, there is not a lot of info online about these bunkers. The site is commonly known as “Bunkeri”.

There are at least two bunkers. The big one on the main picture was full with cow poo, it seems to be used as a shelter for cattle. Inside there are some rooms and a shaft. There was a bat inside. The second one is smaller and in a bit better condition.

Watchtower

There is a wooden watchtower as well on the site.

The second half of the hike is on a more interesting smaller trail than the first half, with some better views.

St Nikola

The trail passes though the village Gorno Sonje, where you can visit the Church of St Nikola, which is from the middle ages, although I cannot find a more exact date of its construction. The church was closed and we did not ask around for the key.

Fountain

After the hike we took the car to see the fountain/spring in Dolno Sonje, which has an old Roman tombstone built into it.

It was nice to finally see the bunkers, but as a hike this trip was not very special. It gets 2.5 from 5 stars.
