This 3 km long trail with 130 m ascent takes you to the Ramnishte Cave near Prilep.

The start of the trail is about 12 km from Prilep, along the road between the villages Oreovec and Krstec (Krstets). The last two kilometers to the starting point are on an unpaved road.

Start of the trail

The start of the trail is marked with a sign. This is also the last sign for the cave, making the sign quite useless because you will not find the cave without detailed instructions or GPS. It had been quite difficult to find the exact location of this cave and it took me almost two weeks asking around on the internet until I had the right information.

Horned Viper

At a certain moment I noticed a snake on the trail, most likely a horned viper. This is one of the most dangerous snakes in Europe, its bite can even be fatal. I recognized it because I coincidentally had read up on this snake a few months earlier, after a report of a Dutch tourist being bitten by a horned viper in Macedonia. Know your enemies! The snake did not seem to be very impressed by us and slowly moved away when I started filming.

Since the opening of the cave is basically just a hole in the ground, it is quite difficult to find even if you know approximately where it should be!

The Ramnishte cave is a large cave, 110 meters in length and 22 m deep. There is a hole in its ceiling through which some natural light comes into the cave. However, you need a good headlight or flashlight to visit the cave. After the narrow and low entrance you can easily stand up in the cave.
