Konjsko at Lake Prespa

There are three villages in the south-west of Macedonia that are called Konjsko: Gorno (Upper) and Dolno (Lower) Konjsko at Lake Ohrid and Konjsko at Lake Prespa.

The Konjsko villages at Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa are geographically close to each other, but separated from each other by the mountains of Galicica National Park. Konsjko at Lake Prespa is the last village before the border with Albania, on the western shore of Lake Prespa.

It is difficult to get to Konjsko at Lake Prespa by car, since the asphalt road stops shortly after the village Stenje. Although it is possible to reach Konjsko with a normal car, you should think twice before you attempt this. The sides of our rental car got (superficially) scratched by the branches of the vegetation along the narrow unpaved road. Alternatively, you can walk from Stenje to Konjsko, it’s about 8 km.

The Church of St Ilija is located between the villages Stenje and Konjsko. There is a sign for the church and a short walk downhill brings you to the small church.

Boat from Konjsko to Golem Grad in Lake Prespa
Boat from Konjsko to Golem Grad

Konjsko itself is a good starting point charter a small boat to visit the uninhabited island Golem Grad (also called Snake Island or Pelican Island). Over the years, we have made the trip to this magical island twice. We just went to Konjsko and asked around if somebody could take us to Golem Grad. I think the last time the boat trip cost us about 25 euros.

On our way back by boat from the island Golem Grad to Konjsko we noticed this cave church on the Albanian shore near Konjsko in 2016. Years later we did a hike in Albania that visited this beautifully located cave church. See Lake Prespa near Tuminec in Albania (13 km) for more information.
