Lake Prespa at Stenje
Lake Prespa at Stenje

Lake Prespa, close to Lake Ohrid in the south-west of Macedonia, is the second largest lake of Macedonia. It must be one of the most multicultural lakes in the world, since Macedonia, Greece and Albania all own their part of the lake. The Galicica National Park separates both lakes. Lake Prespa is located higher than Lake Ohrid, and it is therefore cooler at its beaches than at Lake Ohrid. The water from Lake Prespa feeds Lake Ohrid, as you can witness at the springs near St Naum. The lake is not a lot deeper than 50 m, and therefore the lake itself can get comfortably warm, with its sandy shallow beaches probably more suitable for children than Lake Ohrid.

The legend tells that a town once stood where now Lake Prespa is. The son of the king met a wood nymph of mesmerizing beauty, and he fell in love with her. Although he begged her to become his wife, she refused because she could not marry a mortal being without bad consequences for the groom. Desperately, he kidnapped her and locked her up until she married him. At that moment, the heavens opened and it rained until the town and all its citizen had drowned. The moral of this story being that when a woman says “no”, she really means “no” 🙂

Church near Stenje at Lake Prespa
Church near Stenje

If you take the road from Stenje to Konjsko, you will see a small church on your right, just where the asphalt road turns to the left. I don’t know the name of this small church.

The church housed a whole family of bats!

Hotel Riva in Stenje at Lake Prespa
Hotel Riva

When we visited Stenje, we had a small lunch and beers in the restaurant of Hotel Riva. The hotel was not very well marked as an hotel, but it is one of the last buildings on the road along the lake. See here for the website of the hotel.

Church of St Ilija between Stenje and Konjsko at Lake Prespa
St Ilija

The Church of St Ilija is located between the villages Stenje and Konjsko. In 2016 this road was still unpaved, so think twice before you make the trip to Konjsko by car. The asphalt road stops shortly after Stenje. In 2016 we did this with a rental car, and the sides of the car got scratched by all the branches along this narrow unpaved road. There is a sign for the church and a short walk downhill brings you to the small church. Konjsko itself is a good starting point to take a small boat to visit the uninhabited island Golem Grad (also called Snake Island or Pelican Island).

The most interesting way to get to Stenje from Ohrid is through Galicica National Park: Take the road from Ohrid to St Naum, and enter Galicica National Park on your left just after the village Trpejca. You may have to pay a small toll for this road in the summer. While you drive steeply uphill, the views of Lake Ohrid are stunning, as well is the downhill approach to Lake Prespa.
