Galicnik is undoubtedly the most famous village in Mavrovo National Park. It is build on the slope of a mountain, with wonderful examples of traditional architecture. Galicnik can be reached by car from the village Mavrovo. Alternatively, you hike to Galicnik from Jance. Since 1963, on the 12th of July a traditional wedding is organized, the Galicnik Wedding. This is an event to commemorate the traditional wedding customs and show tribute to the Macedonian cultural heritage. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to be there for this famous event.

The Church of St Peter and Paul plays a central role in this wedding.

Once we arrived in Galicnik after our hike from Jance, we had a very nice lunch in a small restaurant/bar. The Shopska salad was really good and make sure you do not miss out on the local white cheese!

During the hike from Jance, you will pass what looks like the imprint of a foot in the rocks. According to folklore, this is the footprint of King Marko who jumped from here to the other side of the valley in the 14th century. You won’t see this imprint when you are not looking for it. This site is also known as “Markovi Nogi”, “Markova Noga” or “Markova Stopalka”, meaning King Marko’s legs or footsteps. More information and the exact location is indicated in the GPS file that you can find here.
