Lazaropole

Lazaropole is a small village in Mavrovo National Park.

We wanted to visit the Church of St George, a large church surrounded with a wall. Unfortunately, the church was closed and the caretaker did not want to open it for us. These caretakers (or key-holders) are paid by the church to open the churches, so this was very disappointing. The phone-number of the care-taker is even advertised on the signs around the church (+389 (0)70 451 007). Hopefully you’ll have more luck than we did!

If you climb the small hill with the big steel cross on top of it, you have a good overview of the village, and you can have a better look at the outside of the Church of St George.

The church of St Archangel Michael just outside of Lazaropole was open (but not so interesting and not so old, being erected in 2005).

We noticed the church of St Archangel Michael during our hike from Tresonche to Lazaropole. This hike from Tresonche to Lazaropole also passed the rather large Kalina Dupka cave. If you are interested in caves, you can also visit the Alilica cave near Tresonche.

The deserted city of “Glavino Selo” should also be located somewhere along the hike between Tresonche and Lazaropole, but we missed it because we did not know the exact location. I added the likely location of this deserted city in the description of the hike.

Hotel Kalin with 16 rooms is located in the center of Lazaropole. We did not stay here, you can check their website for further information
