Leshok Monastery

Leshok is a village a bit northeast of Tetovo. It is famous for its monastery, the Monastery of Leshok. The monastery complex houses the Church of St Bogorodica and the Church of St Atanas.

The Church of St Atanas (St Athanasius) was built in 1335. The church was abandoned around 1698, but later in 1818 when the hieromonk Kiril Pejchinovich returned from the Holy Mountain Athos, the monastery lodgings were restored and the library was established.

A sign in the Church of St Bogorodica (Holy Mother of God) says:
The Church of Santa Madonna is mentioned for the first time in 1326. According to an inscription the church was renovated between 1345 and 1355. In 1646 frescoes were was painted. In 1879, the church was renovated for the third time.

The grave of the hieromonk, educator and reformer Kiril (Cyril) Pejchinovich is behind the Church of St Atanas. He renovated the monastery lodgings in 1818 and established a library, making the Monastery of St Gavril Lesnovski a center of literature and enlightenment.
