Orovnik is a village close to Ohrid. You’ll find it on the right of the road from Ohrid to Kicevo. The picture is taken close to the Monastery of St Petka. You can see Orovnik, Lake Ohrid and the landing strip of St Apostle Paul Airport.

It is a quiet peaceful village, people keep animals next to the houses.

The Monastery of St Petka is located on a hill above Orovnik. The monastery is signposted along the way from Ohrid to Kicevo. The steep road from the village to the monastery is asphalted. However, instead of taking the car we walked from the Church of St Ilija at the cemetery to the Monastery of St Petka in about 30 minutes. You’ll have a nice view of Lake Ohrid and the airport during this walk.

A sign at the monastery states: “Dedicated to St Petka the Roman. In the middle of the Monastery there is a source of holy water, which is good for the eyes, headache and women who cannot have children. There are lodging houses to stay for free, and a yard for spiritual rest“.

Don’t expect to fill buckets with the holy water, since it is delivered only drop-wise from a small pipe at the side of the church. You can see the water through a glass plate in the floor of the Church of St Petka as well.

St Petka is a working monastery, with a lodging house where you can spend the night. At the moment of visiting in 2010 this was free but a gift to the church is always welcome of course. Rooms are very basic, but the common room even has satellite TV 🙂

The Church of St Ilija (St Elias) was built in 1927 on the graveyard of Orovnik. The outside of the church was being renovated in August 2010.
