Vinica is a village in the northeast of Macedonia, close to Kocani. The name Vinica originates from the first half of the 7th century, because of the grapevine growing and wine production.
Vicina Fortress

The Vinica Fortress, or Vinica Kale, is located on a hill overlooking the village Vinica.

In the middle of the fortress there is a very high metal watchtower. If you dare to climb it, it gives you an excellent overview of the site. Not for those with vertigo!

Vinica Fortress was discovered in 1954.

In 1978 the famous terracotta icons from the 6th and 6th century were discovered in the Vinica Fortress.

The Vicina Fortress is certainly worth a visit!
Gorica archeological site

The archeological site Gorica is just outside of Vinica. Gorica was a settlement in the 4th-6th century. Artifacts in the form of stamps that served as tools for sealing have been found here. There are indications that there were furnaces for pottery at this site. All that you can see now, are the remains of a Basilica. When we visited in 2010, most of the Basilica was overgrown with thorny blackberries and grapes.

The archeological site Gorica is on the right site of the road from Kocani to Vinica, just before you enter Vinica. You cannot see the site from the road, but a good landmark is the blue building on the left site of the road towards Vinica.
Morodvis

In the neighboring village Morodvis you can admire the ruins of a 5th century basilica.
