Star Dojran

In the summer Star (Old) Dojran is very popular among the people from the Gevgelija region and even people from abroad visit here because of Lake Dojran. Star Dojran was heavily bombed during the First World War (1914-1918) and Nov (New) Dojran was built a few kilometers to the north along the the lake soon after the war. Consequently, the older monuments (or their ruins) can be found in Star Dojran.

Dojran Beach at Lake Dojran in Macedonia
Dojran Beach

Lake Dojran is the 3rd largest tectonic lake of Macedonia, after Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. The lake is not very deep, 10 m at maximum compared to e.g. almost 300 m for Lake Ohrid. The Macedonian-Greek border splits the lake in two. Dorjan Beach is a popular place during the hot summers. The beach was very busy, and not very clean when we were there. You can sit on the beach on a mixture of sand, pebbles and grass. The water of the lake may not be as refreshing as you hope for during a hot summer, since the lake is rather shallow and the water warms up quite quickly. The water is green and not as clear as the water of for instance Lake Ohrid. Lake Dojran is more like Prepa Lake, only a lot smaller.

It was difficult to find accommodation in Star Dojran, therefore we stayed in Nov Dojran. We rather would have stayed in Star Dojran because that is were the restaurants and nightlife are. We used Nov Dojran as a base to visit the surrounding towns of Gevgelija and Valandovo.

One upon a time, in the town called Polin, there lived a beautiful girl named Dojrana. She used to get jugs with water from the fountain every evening with her friends. The fountain had to be closed after use everytime. One evening, she went there with her friends, and the handsome Labin who she fancied was waiting there for her. While they started talking, her friends left. When she realized that her friends were gone, she went after them but forgot to close the fountain. The fountain ran all night, resulting into a big lake. When the villagers woke up the next day and found out what happened, they called the lake and the village after Dojrana.

Another, less romantic, legend tells about a Turkish bey who fell in love with the Macedonian girl Dojrana. He ordered his soldiers to bring her to his tent. Dojrana did not feel the same for her occupier and drowned herself in the lake, which was named after her. Clock Tower

Clock Tower

According to folk stories, the Clock Tower was build in the 14th century, after the city was concurred by the Turks in 1372. The legend goes that the Turkish army came over the frozen lake, which was covered with snow, without knowing that it was a lake. When the army entered the city, its inhabitants and the Turkish bey himself were surprised that the army had not drowned. The bey built the clock tower in honor of saving the army from drowning. The tower is in ruins and it does not have a clock anymore. it is located high up a hill in the town of Star Dojran, not far from the ruins of an old Amam. Address: B. Vlahovik; Directions: N41.18507 E22.71979

Ruins of an Amam

The date of construction of this Turkish bath is unknown, but it has been working until its destruction during the First World War in 1916. The water for the baths came in tile pipes from a locality 2 km west from Dojran called Dere-Bash. Nowadays there is not much to see of the Amam, it is in ruins and part of it is covered in plastic for protection.

Church of St Ilija

Church of St Ilija

The Church of St Ilija can be found at the entrance of Star Dojran. It is a very large church, and its size is even more emphasized by its location on a high rock formation. The church was constructed in 1848 and heavily damaged by bombing during World War I. Dojran was part of the Macedonian front during this war.

There is some restoration in progress, and judged from the chairs that were standing in the church in 2012, it also may be in use again, although it had no doors and glass windows yet. Address: Marshal Tito; Directions: N41.18870 E22.71935

Tourist Information Center

Tourist Information Center in Star Dojran
Tourist Information Center

The tourist information center is located next through the main road through Star Dojran. The info center was closed when we got there during its official opening times. The town hall of Star Dojran is just behind the information center and the girl from the info center happened to be in the town hall when we checked there. You can get a map of Dojran with the main sights and some flyers for free at the tourist information center. They can also help you with finding accommodation. Before we came to Dojran, we were told that there would be plenty of B&Bs or apartments available and reservation was not necessary. However, it turned out to be a very hot August in 2012 and a lot of people came to the lake for some refreshment. There were no rooms available anymore, except for the hotels which were either quite expensive or run-down. We got a room in Nov Dojran (New Dojran) instead, which is about 4 km from Star Dojran (Old Dojran). This was not optimal since there really is nothing to do in Nov Dojran! We did not see restaurants there except for the one in our apartment complex Dan-Dar. Main message: be smarter than us, and book a room in Star Dojran if you go there in the summer. There also is an ATM outside of the info center. Address: Marshal Tito; Directions: N41.18699 E22.72116; infocentar@dojran-info.com; +389 (0)34 225 277; http://www.dojran-info.com

Dan-Dar Apartments (Nov Dojran)

Dan-Dar Apartments in Nov Dojran
Dan-Dar Apartments

Because all rooms in Star Dojran were taken in August 2012, we got the phone-number of apartment complex Dan-Dar in Nov Dojran at the Dojran Tourist Information Center. The owner was not very friendly on the phone, which maybe should have been a warning.

Dan-Dar Apartments

The apartment complex itself looks very nice from the outside, it had a pool and its own restaurant. New Dojran is about 4 km from Old Dojran and you should really try to get a room in Old Dojran because there is nothing to do in New Dojran. The first room we were shown was very small and had a very basic kitchen. Since the toilet seat was broken and the toilet had not been cleaned judged by the pieces of *** that were still stuck to the bowl, we asked to see another apartment. This other apartment was actually a very small room, without a kitchen. The room contained a bed and just enough space to walk around the bed.

There was basically no space to put our bags. We took this room anyway because there were no other rooms available. The shower turned out to be broken but was fixed after waiting for 90 minutes. The room had air conditioning, which was really necessary because the room was directly under the roof and got very hot. As soon as the air conditioning was turned off the room became hot again very quickly. The good thing about Dan-Dar apartments was the restaurant, where we ate during the two days that we stayed there (there were no other open restaurants in Nov Dorjan). The food was just the ordinary grilled meat (skara) with fries, but no complaints there. Summarized: The rooms were not so good and a bit overpriced at 1200 denars (20 euros) per night for two persons.
